Four simple questions to ask your event band before your big day…that will let them know you mean business!

Will your band MC?

Bands will often claim they offer MC (Master of Ceremonies) service but make sure they really know how to MC. Part art, part science; an MC plays a huge role in the success of your event. They keep the flow of the party headed in the right direction. They will need significant public speaking skills, the ability to read the room, a massive amount of charisma, unmatched professionalism, and hopefully no jokes! A confident, articulate, thoughtful MC, can truly be the heartbeat of the event.

Are they willing to learn specific songs for your event?

Bands should be willing to bend over backwards to learn specific songs for your event! With the level of musicianship in your event band, learning a new song should be a simple/expected task and part of the process. You should be able to choose a few specific song for them to play. Be it a first dance, dad-daughter, mother-son, or any other dance. How do you think we’ve built up such a diverse repertoire?!

Can they play cocktail hour and dinner music?

You want a band that can play a wide variety of situations and volume levels. For example, if you have a band booked for your reception, impress you guests with the addition of a cocktail hour or dinner set. The band will already be on site for the evening. Cocktail hours and dinner sets are hugely popular these days. Take advantage of your band’s musical prowess!

What trends are they seeing at events?

Ask your band what they are noticing at comparable events. For example, what type of music is really getting people dancing and grooving these days? They should be subject matter experts at entertaining crowds at private parties, so lean on them for some tips and what to expect. This is a great way to get them talking about all the events they’ve played recently. You want a band that is gigging, getting feedback, improving their set, gigging, and gigging more. Gigging leads to stamina, tight chops, expert song transitions and compelling crowd engagement that you will want to see in your event band.
